Policy Overview
Purpose: To keep all members safe from abuse and neglect. Everyone involved — board members, staff, facilitators, volunteers, and members — must follow this policy. Partner organisations are also expected to uphold its principles.
Who is an adult at risk?: An adult (18+) who has care and support needs, is experiencing or at risk of abuse or neglect, and because of those needs cannot protect themselves. Resilience can vary — disability, mental health, and other factors all affect vulnerability.
Types of abuse: Physical, sexual, psychological, neglect, financial, discriminatory, domestic abuse, modern slavery, and self-neglect. Abuse can happen in any setting — at activities, at home, online, or in the community — and may be carried out by anyone known or unknown to the person.
Signs to look out for: Unexplained injuries; missing money or belongings; withdrawal from sessions; changes in weight or hygiene; behavioural changes; self-harm; fear of a particular person or group; or a direct disclosure. Any of these should be taken seriously and reported promptly.
What to do: Report concerns immediately to a safeguarding officer. Record everything accurately and securely. Do not investigate alone. Information may be shared without consent if the person is at risk, being coerced, lacks mental capacity, or a crime may be occurring. When in doubt — report.
Person-centred approach: The member's voice, wishes, and wellbeing come first. Any action taken must be proportionate to the risk and respect their dignity and autonomy. Adults have the right to make their own decisions — support them in doing so unless there are overriding safety reasons.
